There are many varieties of elderberry grown around the world, however it is the European black elderberry ( Sambucus nigra ) that is mostly commonly used as a nutritional supplement.

Elderberries are low calorie food packed with vitamin C, dietary fiber and antioxidants. Another study tested its effectiveness in air travelers. Those who took the elderberry syrup had a shorter duration of cold symptoms and they were less severe than the control group, so for most people it likely wouldn't hurt to include elderberry as part of a healthy diet.
